What We Cover in Key Stage 2 English
Our Key Stage 2 English tuition follows the Department for Education’s National Curriculum. Every topic is taught with clarity and structure so that your child develops the skills they need for the classroom and beyond.
1. Reading Comprehension: Children read and respond to a wide variety of texts—fiction, poetry, playscripts, and non-fiction. Lessons focus on improving understanding, drawing inferences, comparing language choices, identifying themes, and answering structured comprehension questions. Vocabulary-building is also a key part of reading work.
2. Writing Composition: We help children plan, draft, and edit their own writing. They learn how to structure ideas clearly, write for different purposes, and use paragraphs, connectives, and varied sentence structures. Focus is also placed on developing a writer’s voice and using appropriate tone.
3. Grammar, Punctuation, and Spelling (GPS): Children are taught grammar rules and punctuation marks that are appropriate for their year group, including expanded noun phrases, modal verbs, adverbs, relative clauses, colons, semi-colons, and correct verb tenses. Spelling instruction includes statutory spelling lists and common patterns to boost accuracy and confidence in writing.
4. Vocabulary Development: Sessions include activities that help children understand and use more advanced vocabulary. New words are introduced in context to improve both speaking and writing skills.
5. Speaking and Listening: Children learn to present ideas clearly, ask questions, take part in discussions, and respond to different viewpoints. These skills help with classroom participation and improve their ability to structure ideas before writing.
Building Strong Literacy Skills for the Future
