What We Cover in Key Stage 2 Maths

The KS2 maths programme is built around the National Curriculum and is organised to ensure children steadily progress through all the major strands. Each topic is taught in a logical order with clear connections between ideas, helping children make sense of maths in a real-world context.

1. Number and Place Value: Children extend their understanding of number systems, learning to read, write, and compare numbers up to at least 1,000,000. Place value becomes a key focus, including rounding, ordering, and estimating.

2. Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, and Division: Fluency with written and mental methods is strengthened. Children practise multi-step word problems and learn efficient strategies for all four operations. Particular attention is given to long multiplication, division with remainders, and checking answers using inverse operations.

3. Fractions, Decimals, and Percentages: Children learn to compare and calculate with fractions, convert between improper fractions and mixed numbers, and find fractions of quantities. Decimals and percentages are introduced in context, helping children apply their knowledge in practical scenarios.

4. Measurement: Key measurement topics include length, mass, volume, time, money, and temperature. Children learn how to calculate perimeter, area, and volume, and to convert between metric units confidently.

5. Geometry: This includes identifying and drawing shapes, understanding angles, symmetry, and properties of 2D and 3D shapes. Children also learn to plot points on a grid and describe movement and position using coordinates.

6. Statistics: Children collect, interpret, and present data using bar charts, line graphs, and tables. They also explore averages (mean, median, mode) and apply statistical knowledge to solve practical problems.

7. Algebra (Upper KS2): In Years 5 and 6, children are introduced to simple algebraic expressions and equations. They learn to find unknown values and use formulae in real-life contexts.
